2001 : A Space Odyssey Notes

Overall, I have some mixed feelings about the movie. I really liked the beginning and the middle, but the end didn't really do much for me. I really liked the mystery of the monoliths, and what that could mean for the future of humanity, but what we ended up getting was an LSD trip with no concrete answers.

2001 : A Space Odyssey - 1969, post civil war

  • Musical Prologue - Operatic

  • The Dawn of Man

    • Apes and tapirs - Hanging out in the savannah

      • Ape gets attacked by a jaguar, other apes leave it which isn't normal behavior

    • Apes still chilling in the desert, dirty watering hole

    • Apes divide into 2 different tribes

      • One tribe eventually scares the other off from the watering hole, securing water has a resource

    • This has to be the beginning of human evolution

      • Huddled for warmth, no fire

    • A monolith has appeared outside the cave, holy voices singing as the apes go crazy

      • the beginning of religion??

      • Holy singing louder as they touch the monolith

      • Quarter moon and quarter sun does it mean anything- (after looking back after finishing the movie I don't think so)

    • Oh no the monkey has a club

      • Shows off technology and kills a different monkey- scares off other tribe from water

        • COLD WAR ANALOGY

  • There’s a satellite in space- is this the same world the monkeys are on and if so, why are there no humans? There’s multiple space stations it seems

    • This is the future- humans live both on earth and in space, very interesting

  • Super futuristic, some sort of space airport

    • Picture phones

      • Charged like a payphone

    • Earthlight room

  • Multiple nationalities, russians and united states

    • People still live on earth

    • Clavius  - phone line repeated out of order for the past 10 days, bus denied emergency land (violation of IAS convention)

      • Serious epidemic at clavius, unknown origins

    • Mirrored COLD WAR not willing to share information with russians

    • Russians trying to gain information to get advantage - love the cold war analogy

  • Clavius:

    • No epidemic, just a cover story

    • its giving secretive government

      • There seems to be something deliberately buried that the Americans discovered on the surface of the moon

        • 4 million years ago

        • OH MY GOD ANOTHER MONOLITH?!

          • Put on the moon about the same time that the earth (check timeline on that)

          • Google: first humans appeared 5~7 million years ago, so ape timeline still works

          • High pitched sound = Same quarter moon and sun over

  • Jupiter Mission - 18 months later

    • Red eye/lens

      • Comes from HAL 9000 computer

        • AI - reproduce or mimic

        • It talks this will end badly

        • He controls hibernation, nerves and heart of the ship

          • Hes “perfect”- def foreshadowing

    • Men put in hibernation for partition of the flight- done before take off 3 members still in hibernation

    • Does HAL have emotions?

      • He “acts” because he was programs, but does he actually have emotions?

      • No one can truly answer that

    • Is dave having second thoughts about the mission?? - HAL asks

      • HEL - metropolis

      • Hal thinks something odd about the mission and dave agrees

      • Strange stories floating around before they left - something on the moon

        • HAL says he has a mind

        • 72 hours before satellite goes out

    • Theres nothing wrong with the satellite??? Hmmmmm???

    • NASA -  says that the their own 9000 computer says something otherwise? HMMMMMMM

      • Hal says that its human error, not his own

      • Is he saying that the other computer is more human?

  • Intermission

    • HAL MURDERED LITERALLY EVERYONE

      • The eye in the computer pod

    • I cant believe hal is gonna try to gaslight and girlboss his way out of this- Dave still kills him anyway.

    • A note that only Hal has is revealed

  • This is when I stopped taking notes while we watched the movie with the lights off. I did think t was interesting that a lot of the LSD imagery looked very natural. A lot of the shapes reminded me of barrier coral reefs
  • I didn't really like the ending at all. I found it confusing, and it didn't give me any answers which I disliked.
