Interstellar and Our Message for the Future

Image
Interstellar review and notes: Interstellar is a science fiction film that deals with space travel, time travel, and saving the human race. Personally, I really loved this film. I think it was my favorite film that we have watched in this class. I loved the execution of the film, the emotions behind it, the science behind it- I found it all so fascinating. If I wasn't dedicated to becoming a marine scientist, I think I would probably pursue a career in astronomy.  It also fills one of my favorite genres in science fiction: apocalyptic fiction. I love books, movies, and video games centered around how humanity might end. It can be a rather bleak look at humanity, but it can also be incredibly hopeful. A look at how humanity can persevere and serve even in the worst of conditions, even in the worst odds. I think Interstellar really encapsulates this premise of survival and perseverance, in the worst of times. Our project: For our project, we each wanted to focus on important factors

Ready Player 1 - Virtual Outreach and Community

Image
Ready Player 1 Project Minecraft and its Virtual Community I played Minecraft a lot growing up as a kid, so this game is a large part of my childhood. As soon as I finished my homework, my brother and I would hop online and watch each other play minigaame after minigame on different servers. Minecraft is a huge community, and even still a decade after Minecraft was first created, the community only continues to grow. Communities persist outside of the game on various social media platforms, especially Youtube. Minecraft shaped the Youtube sphere that we have today. The most popular "lets plays" (series where Youtubers play the game and upload the footage) introduced billions to the game.  Minecraft's influence cannot be overstated. And despite the simple concept of the game, it has thrive in the game scene. It's a game that anyone can pick up and play. This is why I loved this project. Even though the goal was just to speak with Sam's online friend, we ended up m

Ghost in the Shell - Notes

Ghost in the Shell   Cartesian method Intro  Thesis Antithesis Synthesis (+/-) Conclusion Choose a side If we are part human/part machine, do Asimov’s rules still apply? A robot may not injure a human being orm through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm A robot must obey orders given it by human beings except where such orders would conflict with the first law A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Laws Movie Thats a lot of police men Political asylum HIS BRAIN JUST POPPED OPEN  this intro goes hard Some political drama oooo  It's all about this one guy Her brain was hacked?  Puppet master, infiltrating terminal Reaching the Ghost?  Roll credits What is a ghost? Star Trek - The Influence of Uhura on STEM + Notes

Image
Uhura and her Influence: For my portion of the group project, I chose to focus on Uhura and her influence as an African American woman on Star Trek. As someone who is a woman pursuing a stem career, representation does matter. Growing up, I did get to see a lot of female stem representation. Never as much as male stem representation, but more than I’m sure it was more than most girls ever saw in the 1960s. Uhura was truly revolutionary for this reason. She was a woman (not a stereotype) who was intelligent, strong, and independent. Before Uhura, most female scientists in films and movies fell into harmful, degrading stereotypes. This does not even touch on the racist stereotypes that were commonplace in TV and movies at the time. In my research - I seldom found films before star trek that had female scientists. Clusters of films, but most had a sexist basis or fell into common stereotypes. These stereotypes plague even female scientists in media now: The old maid (too dedicated to her

The Red Pill vs the Blue Pill

The blue pill - continuity of the current state of life i.e. living life without knowing its meaning or running away from the truth in order to stay as comfortable as possible I was assigned to defend the blue pill. Truly, though it isn't the most popular, I think there is a compelling argument behind it. One thing I wish we got from the movie is a look inside of the Matrix, more than we did. I think it would give us a better look of what was like inside of the matrix. However, from the look we did get, it looks just like a reflection of our world, just in the 1990s obvious. My main question is, how bad is it really to live in the Matrix? We can see in the movie that even when people are freed, they aren't necessarily happy. It takes Neo quite a while to adjust to his new life. Cypher is obviously unhappy, selling out his friends who he has fought besides, just because it isn't worth it to keep fighting. It's a miserable existence of gross food, constantly fighting for

The Duality between Decker and Nick Valentine (Creative Process for Collage)

“I’ve seen things you people wouldn’t believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhäuser Gate. All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain. Time to die.” While watching Blade Runner, we were struck by how similar the story was to a lot of the science fiction media we consume. Through research, we discovered that “Do androids dream of Electric Sheep?” by Philip K. Dick was likely the core source of inspiration for not only Blade Runner, but all the media we were reminded of. For me, Deckard reminded me a lot of Nick Valentine, an android detective with implanted memories. Fallout 4 - Abbie - Nick Valentine versus Deckard  “Because I was Nick Valentine. I had his memories, his fears. All that poor bastards hope.” Similarities between deckard (a supposed replicant) and nick valentine (a machine with man’s memories) While watching Bladerunner and researching Bladerunner, I was struck with the possibility that De
